it teaches us that language is flexible. you can speak it, write it, or sign it, and it all means the same thing. if someone doesn't understand it in one way, we can find another way.
it also teaches that language is something we all have to have. if we can't communicate, we can't get anything done. when we're hungry, when we're cold, when we're sad, we have to be able to communicate that.
and it teaches that knowing a common language means people have something in common. someone like you or me couldn't be able to communicate with Helen Keller personally, because we don't know the hand signs she used to say things. so we need common languages that make it easier for people from different walks of life to get along with each other.

Helen Keller taught us that the potential for language development is a natural and intuitive for all humans. Even individuals with limited use of their senses can learn to communicate, receiving and expressings ideas and information. Language and the need to communicate is a basic human need, and people will acquire language any time they are given a natural setting in which to do so. All people have thoughts - language empowers them to share them with others. This was why, even with deafness and blindness, Helen Keller was able (and eager!) to learn language.
