If your hook-up tube to the water supply is plastic tubing, replace it with copper and that should cure the problem. Those plastic hose kits are cheap.

Besides double bagging your onions go to Wal-Mart and get an onion keeper, they're plastic. I have experience with this problem, it's simple. Do not change your water lines to copper, it's an unnecessary expense.
Clean you ice maker out and start over after containing your onions. They're the worst for smells in the fridge.

Try an "old fashioned" ice tray first. If ones made of tap water taste like onions, then it's freezer smell doing it. If the tray ones don't, then you know you need to clean out the ice maker.

Some say when they clean the rusty parts the odor leaves and others say a new ice maker valve solves the problem. The valve could have rust in it, I suppose. Another person said when galvanized steel rusts, it has an onion smell, so all this makes sense.

Sounds like you may need to take the ice maker out and thoroughly disinfect/ clean it.
Maybe put a box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda in the freezer.

Put a box of baking soda(opened) in your fridge(I'm guessing that you have an onion in there?) You might also try to double bag your onions before putting them in the fridge. The smells from your fridge can get into your freezer. If that doesn't help try putting a box of baking soda in your freezer also.
