The spelling's Carthage. It's unfortunately now in ruins (in Tunisia) & was never rebuilt since the Romans destroyed it as the end of the 3rd Punic War.

In case you're interested, there's another Carthaginian city in southern Spain called Cartagena (not sure if it's still alive).

its now called CARTHAGE, in Tunisia. The name stems from Phoenicians, Kart Hadash, meaning the "New City". Legend says that it was created by a Phoenician queen, Didon, who fled her tyranic brother and was fearing for her life after the death of their father by this ambitious brother. She fled to the western Mediterranean up to the bay of Carthage that she loved so much and decided to settle with her follwers. This happened +/- in 800BC. Carthage then, by trade, became the super power of the central Mediterranean bassin fighting three wars against the Greeks for Sicily, up to the coming of another super power: Rome. While Carthage won 2 & lost one against the Greeks, Carthage lost all 3 major punic wars against the Romans, last of which the Romans completely destroyed the city, sold the population as slaves, and poured salt on its land in order to make sure that the city will not be built back. They feared the Carthagenians so much after Hannibal's march onto their land (first ever foreign power to come so close to Rome) with its elephants and battled the Romans for 17 years in Italy!
Romans let the city rot for 100 years before they built it back, stronger and more powerfull than ever, as a satellite of Rome. They built it back in 50 AD as "Cartago" capital of Ifrica, which later gave its name to the continent.
