Yes.

The earthquake starts when the two massive land masses on each side of the fault line break loose, as the Masses are trying to move and build up tremendous pressure in the fault (The actual crack between land Masses) builds and finally releases when the land Masses suddenly jolt apart causing an oscillation resulting in an earthquake.

Underground lava and volcanos can cause earthquakes also

sometimes, but they can also begin miles underneath the fault line... umm i read somewhere that an earthquake happens when two massive plates move and they over lap eachother or move away from each other. we all kno that all land in this world is comin together slowly.

Hi. Sometimes, but most are miles below the surface whereas fault lines tend to be surface artifacts.
