i have worked in the industry for years - both at the top and bottom - the best service provider depends on where u live. All phones have same amount of wattage so none have more 'power' than any other. The type of phone is a different story - reliability in my experience is nokia - they have the best lowest ratio of repair by far.

But to answer your question, what is a good choice in cell phone? That really depends on who your cell phone carrier is because different carriers offer different phones. If available, I would chose the most basic Nokia. If not, chose something easy for you to operate and make sure you have an easy exchange policy that you are very clear on. In addition be sure you are clear on the warranty policy and add the additional insurance if it appears reasonable.

Don't be hasty in buying a phone. I certainly don't see where Cingular has the best coverage. If you live in a metropolitan area check out Jan'06 Consmer Reports in local library. New report coming out for Jan'07. I'd really check out Verizon.
In terms of performance ,you might consider a phone if it has bluetooth, sensitivity of a phone when a person calls using a weak signal, the quality of voice you hear and they hear.

THE KEY TO BEST RECEPTION IS 2 KEY POINTS.
YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER IS THE FIRST
PHONE MODEL BEING THE SECOND

IN THE USA CINGULAR WIRELESS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST CARRIER. THEY HAVE THE LARGEST COVERAGE AREA AND MORE CUSTOMERS THAN ANY OTHER CARRIER.

AS FAR AS FROM EXPERIENCE THE NOKIA 6010 IS GOING TO BE YOUR BEST RECEPTION PHONE PERIOD....

in my opinion, in my area i think of that Cingular and the Motorola products are the terrific for reception and readability. even although I in simple terms performed with the hot Samsung telephone at Cingular("the international's smallest telephone") distinctly cool...the readability seems to be like distinctly good yet no bluetooth.
