According to the psycho-social-bio model there are three components to the cause of depression in women. Biologically, we are different than men ie) hormonal differences and therefore have an impact on behavior. Socially, we have been oppressed for many decades with stereotypical social roles which if we fail to follow will lead to negative outcomes and increase the chances of depression. Sound good?

There are two main categories (if you will) of depression. Clinical depression (meaning absolutely no control - it's a chemical imbalance brought on by nothing in the person's control), and situational depression. Situational depression oftentimes is misinterpreted as clinical, but really all it is is a result of knowing that whatever is going on in the person's life is not where they should be. Whether it's a guy working a job he hates, or a woman who has no goals...or WHATEVER. Men might have bigger egos - they think "I'm depressed but I can deal with it and fix it" cause men are fixers. How many times do women try to vent to their men and end up with a list of solutions to a problem that just needed to be complained about for a bit? And that brings me to my other point - women used to gather around social town centers while doing laundry or shopping because they like and need the interaction with other women. The ability to just talk about their problems, happy times, gossip sometimes....we don't have that nowadays. What do we have instead? A leather couch which we pay to sit on. I don't think women are necessarily MORE prone to depression, I think our way of life leads many psychologists and doctors to jump to that conclusion with women quicker then with men because it's generally easier for us to talk about feelings then it is with men.

Rajarm B is correct, while the psychology graduate, drummer boy is way off. You can always find a wide answer variance in the psychology section. Why is it, though, that so many of the answers here are so wrong? That was a rhetorical question. We know that psychology is ideologically driven and prey to the naturalistic and moralistic fallacy. Psychologist; rid yourself of this discontinuous thinking pattern you are in.

It is a matter how our brains are constructed and the structures are different for men and women. The differences in internal wiring of the brain's functions. lead to diffferences in emotional responses and relationship perceptions. The women tend to be more vulnerable to mood disorders, and men to substance abuse.

There are of course exceptions, but the main reason women are treated for depression four times more than men in this country is simply because they usually have more free times on their hands to think about it, and get bored and wallow in their unfullifilled feelings. The typical female patient who presents with depression to a private psychologist is a stay-at-home wife, usually middle to upper middle class. Hubby is of at work all the time, supporting the family and has a purpose and drive to his life and has not the time nor inclination to wonder whether or not he is depressed. Why do you think depression is the only mental illness--besides anorexia--where women are so much more prevalent? To me, this proves the preponderance of depression in women is situaltional and NOT genetic.

Because women tend to be more perfectionistic, since they have many jobs to do. Wife, mother, sometimes student, add job or two to that, plus all of her housekeeping responsibilities and child rearing responsibilities.
Men come home from work and think their day ends there.
