Hi, I'm just curious if this is an alexandrian phenomenon or if it is even half way true. Also, I am targeting the average middle class egyptian to answer this question since I'm well aware that family money can buy anyone a position even if they're not bright. Am simply interested in trying to understand what the big picture is for an everyday egyptian. I've visited the area and had never seen such depressed gazes. Even the eyes of the poor in mexico didn't look so sad. Of course there was the direct antithesis of happiness (perhaps false since how can someone be truly happy and worry free{to a point, of course}in a country w/ an economic depression) and great hospitality...and what about the women in society? is their pay less for the same job that the men do as is the pay scale in the U.S.A.?

You asked a question whose answer you already know. I'd love to talk about things like these if I had any clue about the intention of the asker.
Some people aim for better understanding of a new country, a new civilization. Others want only to prove a certain point in their mind that the reason of our misery is our ideologies , that the westerners are completely able to eliminate.
I am going to assume that you really want what is best for Egypt. So , in my responce I am going to agree to what you said about the economic status. Yet again, you have to read our history , as the answer is in history books for why we have reached this degree.
The sad gazes in the eyes are due to more than the economic depression. It is because of lots of psychological feelings resulting from the conflict in ideologies and the search for a national and religious identity.
I would love to explain more but the fact that I don't know your intentions prohibits me from doing so.

Have you heard of the book "Guns, Germs and Steel"? You might find your answer there, to yor question -

The economy is bad and the middle classes are having a hard time, however, most are much better off than the poor of India and Pakistan. Most Egyptians whether rich or poor are carrying a heavy burden on their shoulders, that is why the depression is reflected in their sad eyes. In addition the Egyptian worker is lazy and will only work when he needs money, otherwise he will be sitting on one of the coffee shops all day. Generally speaking women's salary is less than men's.

DEAR YOUR QUESTION NEEDS A PANEL OF SCIENTISTS OF VARIOUS FIELD TO BE ANSWERED. FIRST OF ALL DIFFERENCE IN ECONOMIC LEVEL IS EVERYWHERE AND ALSO IN USA WHERE I LIVE. IT IS TRUE THAT THE ECONOMIC SITUATION IN EGYPT IS NOT GOOD.WHO DENIES THIS FACT MUST BE A RICH PERSON. MY RELATIVES TALK ABOUT INFLATION.PRICES ARE GOING UP. NOW ANSWERING YOUR QUESTION ABOUT PAY FOR WOMEN OR MEN IN THE SAME JOB.
THE GOVERNMENT GIVES EQUAL PAY TO BOTH SEXES AND MOST OF THE PRIVATE COMPANIES BUT STILL SOME WOMEN HAVE A LESS PAY. THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION FOR ME TO ANSWER.WHILE IN EGYPT MY WIFE WAS WORKING AS A PHYSICIAN AND HER PAY WAS THE SAME AS A MALE PHYSICIAN IN THE SAME POSITION. PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS COMMON THAT A WOMAN DECIDES NOT TO WORK AFTER HAVING A CHILD BECAUSE MANY OF THE WOMEN THINK CHILD RAISING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE MONEY.
I HAVE RELATIVES IN EGYPT IN THE SAME FAMILY.
THE HUSBAND IS ALL READY RETIRED (EX-ARMY OFFICER) AND THE THE WIFE IS STILL WORKING.
EGYPT HAS FEW STATSTICS PUBLISHED.
EGYPT IS GETTING BETTER , AND IT WOUL BE MUCH BETTER IF WE CAN GET RID OF THE CORRUPTION THAT IS IN THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT. PERSONALLY I THINK THAT EGYPT AS ALL IS IMPROVING BUT NOT AT THE RATE I DESIRE. HOPE TO HAVE CLARIFIED YOUR IDEAS A LITTLE BIT. AND HOPE YOU VISIT EGYPT FOR A LONGER PERIOD AND GET TO KNOW YOUR ANSWER BY YOURSELF INSTEAD OF ASKING AS I DID AFTER MOVING TO THE USA. MODERN EGYPT HAD MANY ECONOMIC CRISIS BUT NONE STRONG AS THE AMERICAN RECESSION. EVERY ONE IN EGYPT , SORRY ALMOST EVERY ONE IN EGYPT TALKS ABOUT THE THIEFS IN CRITICAL POSITIONS IN THE GOVERNMENT , THE PRESENT ONE AND ALL THE PAST GOVERNMENTS. THOSE THAT DO NOT TALK ARE THE THIEFS IN THE GOVERNMENT.

are we to infer from this post that you are happy? i ask because most happy people don't need to run around yelling about it. and most psychologically healthy people don't use that as a trump card over others either. i would expect you to read this article and chuckle to yourself, pleased at having your opinion confirmed. end of story. i have a different theory about people. many (but by no means all) are insecure and it is nearly impossible for them to have an idea and take pride in that. no, unless they can impose that idea on others and insist that anyone who disagrees with them is wrong, THEY are unhappy. ever notice the constant complaining from conservatives on this site about the responses (and violations) they get for questions posted about hillary and obama? the angry and frustrated tone? the questions and the complaints strike me as the product of very un-happy folks. and "rationalization" is a negative term in psychiatric circles. it is generally used to describe the non-linear thinking people engage in to excuse their abhorrent behavior. in fact, a number of conservative bloggers have attacked the study for that reason. odd that none of the conservatives on this site who've seen this article and posted variants of this question have noticed that aspect of it. but what do i know? i'm just another grumpy, depressed liberal. maybe i should stop crying and become a registered republican? nah! i wouldn't want to suddenly have my iq drop as precipitously as conservatism seems to require.

Maybe its too much muslim religion - it teaches people to hate and kill others, while a few muslims at the top live very rich and gaudy lifestyles. I would be very depressed to live in a muslim dominated country. Too much religious hatred.
