She was born in Pontiac, Illinois May 18, 1907.
She was a writer, novelist. She spent most of her life in Illinois.
1939 she earned her Masters degree at the University of Minnesota.
She taught psychology at the University of South Dakota, then returned to Illinois to teach in Cicero, Illinois public school system.
She began writing in 1964 with also publication of, "Cross Five Aprils." She wrote Historicl fiction for children and young adults
She won many awards for her work in writing.
Awards as follows: 1964 C.W. Follett
1965 Newberry Honor book citation.
1965 Lewis & Carroll Shelf Award
1965D.C. Fisher
Childrens Book Award
1967 Newberry Medal
1971 C.W. Follett Award
1985 Parents Choice Award
She later died in Savory, Illinois.
