Do you want to keep your car? Let them pile up and they may impound your vehicle, boot the car to prevent you from driving it anywhere. What a hassle!

Do you want to go to jail? After a certain point, they could arrest you and haul you off until the fines are paid.

From sad experience in Jersey City, pay your tickets. I had a bunch of them from alternate side of the street parking that I didn't know I had.... crappy neighborhood with rotten kids who got a kick out of taking the tickets OFF cars.

Anyway, long story short, 10+ years later, when trying to renew my drivers license in MARYLAND, I had a block on my account because of those tickets! They have a nation-wide network now that will prevent you from doing basic things, renewing license or registration, due to unpaid parking tickets.

So, pay up. It sucks, but in the short term work it.

In some cities, a car with outstanding tickets can be "booted". They put a clamp on a wheel so it can't be moved and will unlock it when the fines have been paid.

Yep, because when it's free, anyone parks. And when you gotta pay, there's some room, SOME, because there's so many people around it's hard to find any room. So they charge.

I've seen san francisco, and I'm telling you, they need to charge or there is no room for anyone!
