depends on who you are talking to -- if you are talking to coworkers then you are proably fine with it as they adjust to behavior -- a client would want more direct eye contact. i don't think it is rude not to look at someone. i have very strong eyes and have learned not to look at people directly for long periods of time because it intimidates them. usually when people are thinking they do things like look up and to the right. so its normal. if you are looking up and to the left it signifies lying though -- don't do that.

Your thinking about the topic, but it is kinda rude to stare out into space. You can still think about the topic, but look at them and pay attention to what they are saying, because they will ask you if you are paying attention to them and will ask you to repeat what they said. when you are listening to someone, look at them, not stare at them, kinda lean forward indicating that you are interested in their topic of interests when talking which they will think so.

I stare into space and think about something interesting.

Talk to me about water quality, or RTO gases, and I look you directly in the eye visualizing the problem (or solution).
