Good luck trying to find a free or cheap horse that is healthy. I was given a free horse just a week ago. She was given away because someone was threatening to turn him in for animal abuse.

My free horse is a beautiful pure bred quarterhorse that is 6 years old. She is the sweetest and calmest horse in the world, however she is also the skinniest horse I've ever seen.

She had been kept in a stable with very little food. She now roams 5 acres and is happy as can be.

This free horse in one week has cost, $120 in shots and about $125 in food, including hay. She is so skinny she will probably not be able to be ridden for at least 6 months. In these next 6 months, she will have to be fed at least twice a day with 4 different kinds of food and supplements to help her get back to her normal weight.

I love animals is why I took her. In the long run, it would be better to pay for a horse that is healthy. I'm pretty sure that I'll spend more in food trying to get her back to her original weight than if I'd just bought a healthy horse outright for $1000.00. I also could've been riding the horse from the day I got her.

I feel good that I rescued this horse though. When I finally can ride her, I think we will be very well bonded and already I think she knows that she can trust me.

Very often, FREE is too good to be true. Most people who take care of their horses, take much pride in them also. If you get free or cheap, they may end up costing you more in the long run. Good Luck!

You are going to find out that horse ownership is going to ur biggest problem, not buying the horse. Upkeep is EXPENSIVE, If you are sure u have enough money, try adoption, they occasionally give away a free horse, and thier horses are nearly always cheap. Otherwise i suggest you lease a horse.
