Generally, yes, it's safe. Coming from Des Plaines, you'd probably want to take the Blue Line in, which probably runs 24/7 since it goes to O'Hare, so you won't have to worry about getting stuck. Just remember: stay aware, stay with others (even if that just means being in a crowd of strangers), and if you feel uncomfortable, find the nearest CTA employee.

I completely understand what you are asking. I lived in Chicago for awhile several years ago and knew no one in the city. I found that with a little exploring, Chicago is an amazing place to live, especially if you are single and can get out on your own. I left the city 5 years ago, and still have friends there I see every chance I can get.
The EL is very safe. There are neighborhoods in Chicago you certainly want to avoid, and you would be wise to stay close to the Loop and Near North. Don't be stupid, but don't be obsessed with fear. I have walked through some pretty 'iffy' neighborhoods in Chicago (a friend lived new Cabrini Green) and was never bothered.

Coming from someone who's lived in Chicago all her life the answer is NO. When you go to the club you go as a group and you leave as one. That's a rule when my friends and I go out one of us sober to accompany or drive someone home if they've had a few too many to make sure they get home safely. You don't want to be riding the trains all over the city because certain routes stop running at a certain time and some neighborhoods in Chicago are kind of dangerous even for those who are familiar with the area.
Try to get involved with social groups that do things to help you begin to make the kind of friends who are like minded as you are. But don't go roaming all over the place and end up in a neighborhood you're not familiar with. Trust me on this one.

Why would you want to "roam around" on public transportation? It's pretty safe, but of course at night you might run into someone you don't want to on the subway or standing on a bus stop. But that's true for every big city. But if you're hitting places in well-populated areas, you're pretty safe because everybody else is doing the same thing. But if you're staying in Des Plaines, I wouldn't party too late here in the city. You still have to get back to Des Plaines and who knows how long the trains back to Des Plains run at night. You should have stayed in the city, that way you can stay out as late as you want and not have to go all the way back to Des Plaines.

Chicago's public transport is safe. You can go anywhere around the city and you will find lots of public transport.
Better to be accompanied by someone who knows night out in Chicago for you to enjoy the place and also they will be someone that you can talk to :)

It depends on where you go. Stay close to the loop and you should be pretty safe. Be street smart.
