definitely have the rack and pinion checked, i used to have an oldsmobile with similar symtoms... the steering would actually jerk so hard that you would nearly run off the road, and sometimes it would "lock" in a turned direction until you physically "broke" it free by jerking on the steering wheel... that car was a death trap

Most likely you have bad or dry ball joints and bad/dry steering A arms. Had one so I know where you come from. I replaced everything and the car was perfect for the next 10 years!

i own a repair shop, and it could be a number of things, first you need to check, and see that the wheels are tight on it,,and then check and see that the wheel bearings aren't trying to lock up on it,and also check and see if you can wiggle the wheel ,,if you can it needs to go to a repair shop, but it needs checked,it may be getting ready to loose a needed part, and also check the brake caliper on it,it may be about ready to fall of ,,good luck,i hope this help,s.and have a good thanksgiving.

The jerk behind the wheel needs to take the car to a competent mechanic.
