You have the original Gameboy, which obviously plays all gameboy games, but not some Gameboy Color games.
Then you have the Gameboy Pocket, which does everything the original does, just in a smaller package.
The Gameboy Color was released next and it play all the original Gameboy games as well as the color games.
After that came the Gameboy Advanced, it plays original, color and advanced games.
The Gameboy Advanced SP released next and featured enhanced video, but was essentially the same as the advanced.
Next comes the Gameboy Micro, which again is a redesigned advanced. This version however does not play original or color games. In order to reduce size and cost, the processor that those games run on was removed.
Nintendo considers it a separate line altogether, but the next system in the hand held line is the Nintendo DS. This system can play DS and advanced games. Like the micro, it also does not pay original and color games. Those games ran on a different processor and it was not included to reduce cost and to save weight.

there's the original GB, GB Color, GB Advance, GB Advance SP, and the Nintendo DS. I think all newer versions play older games.

the list can b found in big's answer and they all can play older games but ds cannot play gb or gbc but can play gba due to cartrige sizes

GBA is the lastest.
NDS is not a game boy serie, am i right??? just because it is from nintendo, isn't necessary have to be related to Game boy right??
