Simmering hostilities between Spain and the U.S. that most history books tell you erupted into war when the U.S.S Maine which was in harbor in Cuba blew up. It was blamed on the Spanish, but History channel recently had a documentary on this where forensic metallurgists, etc. went back and re-examined the evidence from the ship and determined that it was an accidental coal fire setting off the ammunition magazine that blew the ship up. We used that "excuse" to launch attacks on the Spanish and the War was on. By the way even though that was 100 years ago they only this past year repealed the "excise" tax on your's and mine telephone bills that was originally passed to pay for that war. One tax that just kept paying and paying!!!

It was a fony blame on a Spaniards for the explosion of a USS ship; fed mainly by a newspaper owned by William Hearst who photographed fake dead marines on some Florida beach, claiming that it was dead US soldiers mistreated by the Spaniards. Hearst built his media empire on this war, as his journal was the #1 sold paper in the country during the war. His life was the basis of the movie "citizen Kane"... a fascinating little war this Spanish-American war; and a clue to USA's world ambitions.

Well, as far as I recall from my school days. There was deep tension who claim what in the Caribbean by the US and Spain, Particularly Cuba. The Sabre rattling started When US accused Spain of Sinking their Battleship(I think it was the "USS Maine") in the waters of Cuba which start the war. Result in invasion of Cuba and Spain losing lot of their territories. Possibly as far as the Philippines. More than half century later, they say that the Maine's boilers had prematurely had exploded. Not resulting from an attack by Spain.

In addition to the destruction of the Maine:
1.) Spanish repression of the Cubans.
2.) Yellow journalism exploiting the atrocities to sell newspapers which fanned the public desire to intervene.
3) Desire of the USA to force all European imperial powers out of the western hemisphere. (Monroe Doctrine)
