You do not until you open it that is why it is always good to scan it before you open it

You run an antivirusprogram. I can give a few links that offer free virus and spyware removers...! Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at

If it's under 1Mb in size, you can scan it (saved, but not opened)online at Kaspersky.
Otherwise use the usual antivirus programs.
