man, the story doesn't make sense to me...
Why might Jerry have made up the stories about his mother and his skates?

Sometimes kids make up stories to cover up or avoid sadness and pain. He may have wanted to create an artificial "happy place" and draw someone else into that fantasy to make it more real so that he can deal with the loss psychologically.

1. I don't remember. ( I read it 1 time earlier this year in the 8th grade. and I don't remember much about the story.)
2. He probably didn't want any sympethy from the guy that he chops wood for.
