Oh dude!
Firstly, the kilts are worn by SCOTTISH men, NOT Irish - completely different culture.
And yes, its true - its customary not to wear anything underneath (you forget that the Scots have been around for a long, long time - before the advent of underwear).

You don't have to wear anything under a kilt if you want to. Most men wear something under it, but there are some hard core guys out there who will do that. I know a few. And it is the Scottish that wear kilts, not the Irish.

You are not supposed to wear underwear under the kilt, which is an irish invention not scottish, so you are correct, the irish just stopped using them. The scots were a splinter clan set from ireland and they actually invented trousers.

It is possible to wear underpants under the kilt (a Scottish garment), but it is frowned upon.
If you are really interested, I suggest you watch the movie "Carry On Up The Khyber".

the kilt is a traditional scottish garment, not irish(i am from ireland). it is not true that you can't wear underwear. with the climate in scotland you'd be best to wear underwear, unless you enjoy the draught i guess :-).
