NOTHING
That's why their called responsibilities - you can't abandon them and still be an adult. I have a 3 year old son, and while I would love to have a day where I can just ignore everything and do what I want, I know that's not being realistic. My son depends on me to be there when he needs me, my wife depends on me to be there when she needs my help, and nothing can stop that from happening until I am dead. Being an adult is more than just your age.......
it's also being an adult to those around you.....

Wow. There are so many answers to this question. It would have helped if you had listed a circumstance of someone doing it.
I have seen totally responsible adults just totally lose it and walk away from a good life because of stress. I've seen others do it because of a dependency (alcoholism, drugs, sex). I've also seen people walk away from one set of adult responsiblities to take on others.....letting go of the past. For instance, a perfectly responsible husband and father walks out of one household to take up with another woman. He is responsible to his current situation...just not to his past one.
Selfishness is also another good reason. Some people just give up and say, "I'm tired of always being the responsible guy. I'm getting wasted tonight and not being the designated driver." The ball starts rolling there....

We recently learned about adolescence in human biology, and it seems to be characteristic of all teenagers. Need for financial and social independence, but not the responibility that goes with it.
I've thought about this myself and I figure that it's an adolescence thing, so I won't be able to change it by anything I do psychologically. Soon I'll grow out of it and be mature, but until then, I'm not going to worry about it.
Sooner or later though, like me, you're going to have to decide when to do something beyond the call of duty.

I think we all at some point get bone weary of routine, comforting as it can be. It is like living in a grey neighborhood and off in the distance you hear a ice cream truck, then see it's colorful lights, know it will be worth it just to grab a dollar and take off running for it.

mom and dad can take only plenty blame for a manner their youngsters prove. as quickly as a man or woman is an grownup, they get to take duty for his or her very own movements. the mom and dad do no longer might desire to spend something of their lives beating themselves up for a manner their baby became out. mom and dad on occasion might desire to shrink off the relationship with the aid of fact they're in order that bored to death in being in contact with somebody who's a poisonous portion of their existence. the affection does not stop, yet you may no longer shop on being an element of somebody's existence while they're so unfavorable.
