I am an animal lover, and in no way promote abuse. But sometimes when training doesn't do it, i have seen people smack their dogs (not too hard) just to let them know, you don't get to growl at ME, I am your boss. It usually helps when they know they can't mess with you. I work at a vet clinic, and the vet i work with had a mastiff come in today. This HUGE dog scared me, and it knew so it growled at me, i passed it off to the Doctor, and as soon as it growled at her, she popped him on the head, and said NO! He put his head down, and quit growling. As long as it is not in an abusive way, i think sometimes it has to be done.

Dogs live in a hierarchy not a democracy. They don't share and don't respect when you try to "earn" their respect. A dog will try to outrank you if they see an opportunity. Often times you can use training tools, like choke chains, and body language to keep a dog in line. There are times when all that "bluffing" just doesn't work, and the dog challenges your authority. Since dogs are primitive when compared to humans, they tend to be more physical. When they struggle to get your "rank," a quick smack will inflict enough pain to show that you could hurt them if you want, but not too much pain to where the dog fears you. The smack is suppose to show that you are in control, in that the dog cannot defend itself from you and should obey if it wants to live peacefully.
Usually going beyond "bluffing" and having to physically strike the dog is not necessary. Most dogs are "betas" and like having the responsibility of directing the pack being placed on anyone but them. You still have to be firm with them though, so that they understand that you will put them in place if they do get out of line.
Dogs are a good choice for man's best friend. They think about things in the same way as us---who's in charge? maybe I'll have a chance to be in charge? I can do that job better than he/she can. I wish someone else was in charge rather than me.

If you want a dog to trust you, you cannot smack it. Respect is earned not given. To get respect, you must use respect. There's not a whole lot of respect in smacking something smaller than you. Honestly, how "mean" could the chi have been? Someone should have spoken with the owner and asked to have the animal restrained.
Animals will respond to a smack, that much is true. Would you 'smack' a pittbull, or rottweiler, or doberman the same way you suggest smacking the chi? Bully to the fool who smacks my dogs. They're little but I guarantee you they would turn on you in an instant.

Some dogs are aggressive due to being given the alpha title, with no fight. Once someone ''fights'' back, even in the sense of a pop on the head, a dog can feel defeated.

The only time I give my dog a bit of a whack is when he sits on my knee. I've tried explaining to him that he's not exactly a lap dog but he refuses to move! (he's a 25 kilo staffordshire terrier) The only way to move him is to give his butt a bit of a whack but he loves it when I do that, so I end up relenting and let him sit there. It's a bit of a sight to see, but oh well, I love my dog!

I am IN NO WAY condoning beating your dogs, but when my dog was a puppy she was very nippy. The only way we could get her attention and make her stop biting was to tap her on the nose. Not hard enough to hurt her, just enough get her attention. It was a last resort and worked pretty well. We never spank her now, she is 3 years old. She hasn't nipped anyone since either.

I never smack my dogs with my hand, I used newspaper to establish alpha dog status. The sound of the newspaper is scary enough to get their attention without actually harming the dog.

I have given my dogs some smacks(not too hard, mind you) on the bum to get them out of places they shouldn't be. It works. They get it.
