Cells are colorless until they are stained. They color that they appear is then based on what type of stain was used. Hope that helps.

blue? I don't think so.

The cells are normally stained blue with a dye (called tryphan blue) to differentiate between live and dead cells. Only dead cells would take up the blue color as their membranes are not functionaing anymore.

However, I'm not sure what the actual color is because we normally stain the cells with some fluoresence dye before we look at it under the microscope.

both of those things are clear. If under a microscope they are blue, its because they've been stained with a blue colored dye.
