I am a 19 year old Puerto Rican woman, and because of this, I am made fun of because I use intelligent phrases or words. Sometimes I am made fun of just because I know how to spell...and it is not because I correct nor insult anyone.
I am just wondering, why do some people believe that to be "superior" to others, they must lower themselves? To me, this is just ridiculous and a way for someone who is lazy to still feel good about themselves...

Anyway...I would like to know what others feel...

To answer your question...yes I am going to college. I am a student at UCF in Orlando, FL.

But, of course, it is hard to find too many people who don't drink and party every weekend. It's not that I think I'm better than anyone else, I just don't find it fun.

I would rather go to movies or dinner with my friends than to a bar or a party.

You need to find new friends. Don't "dumb" yourself down to impress anyone. When you get older and into the "real world" people will appreciate your intelligence. Just remember to use it kindly. No one likes a smarty pants. ;)

Quite a conundrum, isn't it?

I suggest you try to associate with more people who can communicate on the same level, and respect your grasp of the English language. Believe me, if you visit any university campus in the US or Canada, there are people functioning day-to-day at a much higher scholastic level than both of us. This may not be true for you. I find that a lot of people try to "show off" by using long and complicated words, and they end up using the word incorrectly.

The meaning of intelligence is being able to find the easy way to do any given thing, so why make life difficult for yourself and others by intentionally being complicated?

Those people have insecurities within themselves so they have to find fault in someone else and deem them "not kool." Actually, being intelligent is way kool, sexy and awesome!
