1. Semi Western or Western grip. Those are the two grips that allow you to hit top spin. 2. Bending your knees. By doing this it allows you to explode up into the ball. So your body is going up the same way your raquet is.

The best two critical features to hitting a topspin forehand
for a right hander is:
1. Contact the ball at the 5 o'clock position
2. Release the ball at the 11 o'clock position
left hander is:
1. Contact the ball at the 7 o'clock position
2. Release the ball at the 2 o'clock position

There is more to it than just 2 crucial points...
Hitting from the bottom to the top is pretty important for topspin, but topspin is not crucial for a forehand.
Hitting the ball out in front of you is important because that shows that you didn't just hit with your arm but with your whole body.
Having the right grip is also very important for a good forehand.

make a loop when hitting it. meaning down to up. this produces some topspin, which enables the ball to have a greater chance of hitting inside the court. Another one is to make sure that when you hit the ball it is only slightly slanted. You should also use full swings when you practice. When you hit, it, the racquet has to end up somewhere around your shoulder. You don't want to have your racquet end up in front of your stomach because it's not as accurate if you hit it that wat.

1) you need to swing back and follow through fully 2) hold out your racket and tilt it forwards 10-15 degrees, this will put some topspin on the ball

I agree with Cameron T. But, he needs to explain it in english. He meant to say: "Swing from down to up, while keeping your racket tilted a bit; hitting it head on is like swinging a baseball bat."

1. Smooth backswing (not too early, not late).
2. Shift your body momentum forward while hitting the ball (for most balls).
