I am not familiar with NE Ohio, but in NW you can look in the following:

Woodville, Gibsonburg, Lucky, Pemberville, Oak Harbor, Genoa

The smaller towns to the east of Toledo have alot available. Small communities with decent schools as well. Good Luck!!

Hey man, I live up "north" in suburban detroit.
Lots of former autoworkers bought up lots and lots of farms and acreage here in the state during the good runs we had for years and years.
Since the economy is doing so poorly now, all this stuff is being practically given away.
The weather should be wee tiny bit harsher than ne ohio, but not much more, and certainly nothing you cant handle.

There is an age ole saying "Family friends and money are like oil and water, they don't mix very well." You have hinted to that point in your statement. You did not indicate your age. Parents normally help out children when they are very young and just starting out in life. For those that are mature, you might would want to be more independent, moving into your own place that you could afford. From looking at your statements about your parents it appear as if they might be trying to control you as indicated by "Once we told them we would be moving they offered to purchase us a house. You and your husband would have to sit down with each other and make a decision as to what would be best for you and your son. Since your parents are involved, once you and your husband has made a decision, then inform your parents of your decision. You are not there to consult with your parents on your decision, you are there to inform them of your decision. I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck. "FIGHT ON"

Check out some of the real estate sights on the web. One of my favorites is:www.realestate.com
Just type in the state and county your interested in the amount you want to pay and farm.
Also check out the counties and go into other realtor sights.
