Call me stupid, but I had no idea this book was so controvesial before we read it in school. We watched this video when we finished the book about the issues of the 'N' word. A lot of African Americans were very offended by the term being constantly used, even though it wasnt derragatory at all in the book. They also talked about how kids in school could be offended/abused by being made to read this book. Uhh, wake up people..your kids are listening to music, watching tv and movies that use words like these constantly. And how come black people are the ones complaining about this when they use it the most? I think they need to suck it up and accept the fact that this is one of the most popular novels in american history.

Oh, and for the people against the book...if you had read it and looked beyond just the 'N' word, you would realized that mark twain was depicting a black man, Jim, just as "human" as any other character. In fact, this was the first book to do that.

Absolutely not. I think it should be taught in the classroom and given the respect it deserves. For one thing, Twain is a satirist and people tend to forget that. For another, Jim is depicted as the ONLY decent adult in the entire novel. Third, and I believe this wholeheartedly, to ban the book and deny it in classrooms is to deny the very racism that still beats within America today. People must consider the time in which the book was written and the time in which it was set. Huck Finn is set shortly after the Civil War-and in the South- where certain language was common place. All Twain does in the book is create the same dialect. One of the beautiful things about Literature-and this is why I love it- it can be such a powerful tool in helping to change the world. That is part of what Twain hoped to accomplish. If people are not given an opportunity to discuss such issues, especially in the safety of a classroom, then where are they free to discuss it?

No book should ever be banned. There are those that are not worthy of reading in school. Huck Finn is not one of them. The best thing about this book is its use of prejudice. Twain gives Huck the popular beliefs of the time and makes them more shocking and ridiculous. By saying it out loud he made people look at their own beliefs and maybe he changed some minds.

I loved the book. Plain and simple and I am not a racist, it never made me look at african american people in a derogatory fashion, it was a name, as African American is a name. I am white, it is a name. It was merely an indicator to me not a put down. I believe this book should remain in schools. I think they should wipe out all violent music, but that is a different subject.

I learn Huckleberry Finn while I was once approximately 10 or eleven and I adored it. I did not learn it for college, as it is not a collection textual content for faculties within the UK. I simply learn it considering that I concept it seemed well. I nonetheless believe it is amazing. Disliking a e-book isn't the equal as discovering it 'offensive'. And I do not believe any books will have to be banned, although any one does uncover them offensive.

You are right. In every rap song they spit out the N word left and right but when it is used in a manner that was common in early America people get upset. If rappers and Blacks would stop using it then maybe they could make some progress. As a white person I don't call myself or my friends any racial slurs. That is plain ignorant.

Huck Finn is a classic and it should definitely be kept in schools. And i completely agree with you, it's not nearly as bad as the rap music these people listen to, or the movies they watch.

I don't think that the Mark Twain meant it in a bad way at all. it was just their way of talking back then.
