Most christians don't really choose ,either your a catholic or a protestant due to your family history and the traditions you grow up with. Only when as adults some people get so fed up with their current church they may search for one that is more inline with their beliefs. Protestants refused to accept the authority of the pope. This runs deep either your are a pope person or not. In history many protestant countries had Kings. Catholics refuse to bow to eartly kings.

The methodist /pentacostal thing that is something else. Pentacostals are seeking a much more fundamentalist and stricter Faith.

It basically has to do with their belief system and how they like to worship. If a person believes that the BIble is the Word of God from cover to cover, etc., and believes it, they will most likely be Pentecostal or a Born Again Christian. If a person believes in a church writing doctrine to supplement the Bible, then they will most likely fall into any one of the various "isms" that we call religion.
