The story is about a *boy* who never grew up, hence the name "Peter Pan." J.M. Barrie wrote the story based on the Llewelyn-Davies' children. The movie "Finding Neverland" is based on Barrie's life with the Llewelyn-Davies family and his writing of Peter Pan. Much of it is based on truth...some of it is merely inspired by truth (for example, there were more than 4 children).
As far as plays are concerned, the role is typically played (and was originated) by a girl. The reason being is that the age of Peter Pan is typically a period when most boys hit puberty...and their voices begin to change. This wouldn't work for a boy who never grows up (and hence never experiences puberty), so the only way they could keep a young voice was to cast a girl in the role.

Of course, Peter Pan is normally played by a girl even on Broadway like Mary Martin (I find that super creepy, I don't know about you.) but it could definitely be played by a boy and sometimes has. What you need to do if you get to audition is nail it and prove you're the best for the songs. I don't know about the flying part, though!

i think that the original Peter Pan in JM Barrie's play was played by a woman, because i believe it was hard to find a child actor who could play such a big part.

JM Barrie's book was about a boy who never grew up-so I think Male. However, from the Viewpoint of Pantomime performances, there's a tradition for the principal "Boy" to be female...

In the book he is a boy. The part has usually been played by women, notably Mary Martin(first) and Cathy Rigby on Broadway.

The original story was about a boy, but on stage the role was played by a girl. Couldn't tell you why.
