Never in American history has the Commander in Chief had to be subjected to the will of the American people in terms of military planning and organization, and the same still applies here today. This is based solely on the fact that the citizens do not know about the full situation over there, the secrets, the confidential war plans and discussions with the generals.
And yet the American people do have a voice, and it was expressed last week during the elections, which will place limits upon Bush's presidency. This is the American voice, and it has been heard in Washington, I'm sure.

I hope a great spirit steps in and instructs every single US soldier to lay down arms and refuse to fight this stupid, no-win, Bush-based, Condi-designed, neoconservativejacked up; Rummymess; UStroops dyingfornothing; insurgentskickingazz; war
and send Bush. Let HIM fight the 'war' that he created. Let him and the rest of the 'gang' show THEIR patriotism
US troops will never win this war. Why? because Bush never declared it a war. The more troops are committed, the more troop deaths.Sooner or later the US will be forced to withdraw. Because we had such an ignorant president, the Iraqis now know that we are there but for one thing. Iraqi oil. But it will never be. Bush already had Saddam. Saddam was going into exile (Maybe now that Rummy is gone, he'll tell the truth about that little deal) But no. Bush had to go in guns blazing, creating more horror than peace. If he'd done this peacefully, there would have been problems, of course, but the US could well have brokered a deal diplomatically so that by now, instead of STEALING Iraqi oil, we may well have owned a good portion of it.
But the Iraqis know the real deal now. And the US will never defeat them. The occupied outnumber the occupiers......remember that.

This is how it is done. Research your foe, analyze his strengths and weaknesses, past behavioral patterns compared to current actions, then you move in as swiftly as possible with overwhelming force and violence and put...them....down. We have not done this up to this point. Just recently, with the announcements to reconsider strategy are we slowly coming to realize that winning the hearts and minds will not work. This war can be won. Sadly, our foes have gotten the impression we no longer have the stones for a real dust up. I hope we are moving in the direction of proving them wrong. This war need not take years and years, commit enough troops and material to overwhelm the enemy and it will end rather quickly. And yes, I would be proud to go. Did my part in the late 60s but for the future of my Grandkids, I would return to active service in a New York second.
And I disagree with your assessment of the situation. Staying the course is imperative. Otherwise, the people we have lost will have died for nothing. And fighting a war on public opinion happened when I was in service, it did NOT work then, will not work now. In a fight, you go with everything you've got and don't stop till the other guy is down and defeated. I am not a fan of President Bush nor his political opponents, I am a fan of our fighting men & women and support them and their war. Can't have it both ways.

2) Yes we are still a democracy. A representative democracy. Always have been.

I find it difficult to believe that this president, in the post 911 world and unlimited resources and support of the nation, is losing the war on terror. It's an established fact that al-qaeda has grown and it's more powerful before 911. This war in iraq has increased Islamic radicalism and more anti-american terrorism. Bush has made america a danger zone because our enemies hate us even more. And america is fighting this alone. No allies. This is the worse foreign policy of any president in the history of the US.
