The advantage that Dreamweaver and Notepad share over Front page is far, far less bloated files.

There's not much of an advantage over Dreamweaver, presuming you're not paying for it, because dreamweaver's got it's own text editor, complete with syntax highlighting and manuals.

The advantage to hand-writing HTML (or any other code for that matter) is that, once you've got the hang of it, it's infinitely more powerful than using a WYSIWYG editor, since you can do everything the code will allow, not just what the particular editor does. Also, it's easier to fix code when you know what it does.

EDIT: (real men use Vim)

While 'notepad' is not an editor I would like to be seen using, it does have advantages: It opens quickly, and it doesn't add crap into your files.

There are a lot of free and shareware editors on the market. Try to get hold of PFE (Programmers File Editor) - you can configure it and it is quite powerful. I think it is free.

By the way... if you want to keep your files small, and don't want additional crap added to them, then stay right away from Microsoft Word.

Frontpage... *ewww*
Dreamweaver... *slightly less ewww*

If you use Dreamweaver as an aid to create page prototypes, then it is good. If you use it to create pages and you vow that you will be happy with whatever is produced, then it is good. In general, Macromedia have got things right with their product offering. Microsoft are still producing rubbish (cf Frontpage)

However, if you want a clean HTML structure behind your page, you have to write it in an editor that is not WYSIWYG, because GUIs for creating webpages tend to automate a lot of stuff and don't get it right all the time.

I started writing web-pages in 'vi' which is without comparison the best editor available ;-)

Well Front Page is just junkware in my opinion because it inserts all kinds of code into a page and tries to rewrite what you're doing sometimes. So let's take that out of the equation.

There's no advantage to using Notepad over Dreamweaver. Why? Because Notepad just edits text. Dreamweaver can do the exact same thing when in Code View. DW can give you hints and help you reference syntax and Notepad cannot. Then if you want to switch to Design View you can do so in DW and work almost like you do in Word (with some obvious differences) and DW will write code for you, but only if you choose so.

So DW is everything Notepad is and much more.

I would recomend Arachnophilia as the best FREE website builder and editor. It has all the advantages of a text editor in that you have accesss to all the code, but it doesn't put loads of wierd coding into your pages, or messwith your form scripts without asking you like Dreamweaver does.

Lord : Yoi're gonna get flamed by people asking what WYSIWYG means. Redirect them to me it it gets too much, I'll and paste the man page from vi into notepad for them.

With notepad you always -know- what is going into your web file. With DreamW and Frontpage and MS Word you are always worried that it will put some junk in that might affect what you are trying to do.

That's why I call it "knowtepad"
(another bad joke)

Notepad is for advanced users of HTML and JAVA SCRIPT -

For first time web builder: http://www.piczo.com is perfect.

Notepad if I remember however has excellent services and help line, and is free.

Dreamweaver however is very good for semi advanced users, It supplies backgrounds, is free and offers a help line.
