Sodium hydroxide (commonly called lye) is the main ingredient of classic solid Drano® Kitchen Crystal Clog Remover. The product also contain aluminum shavings (metallic Al) to react and cause the liquid inside the drain to heat up (this also bubbles to "stir the liquid" and make it seem like something is going on).

Drano® Build-Up Remover works over a longer time period and contains helpful microorganisms that release enzymes to break down residue.

The liquid and gel products contain various other chemicals (besides Sodium hydroxide) like Myristamine and Sodium hypochlorite (bleach).

Draino is a strong base, sodium hydroxide and the formula is NaOH. It is made of the metal ion, (sodium +) and the powerful base ion (OH-). When in the solid form, it attracts water to its surface, giving off heat and forming a powerful solution. It is very dangerous to touch, causing chemical burns, and really a terrible idea to keep at home. Use a plunger or snake to clear a drain instead. If that doesn't work, try hot water, but don't use this stuff, it could seriously hurt you and the poor plumber who has to come and clean up the mess. You can avoid a lot of these problems by not flushing wads of paper and by using a strainer to avoid hair down the drain in the bathroom. In the kitchen, never pour grease down the drain. Bye

What is the main ingredient, chemical formula, and name of drano?

Seven years later and the ingredients are a bit different. Either they've done away with the Al or are using less of it, and or some other ingredient. A bow to environmental extremists, at the cost of becoming much less effective. We don't buy it anymore because it just doesn't work very well any more.

There are also Al shavings present to reduce corrosion to the pipes.
