Unwritten litteratur, in the form of riddles, stories, rhymes, songs, etc. of a certain culture. They circulate by word of mouth (of course, since it's unwritten). Any story you know of that has been written down by the Brothers Grimm are all folktales (or at least, they were, before they were written down).
