I have a '97 Dodge Dakota that does have high mileage, but runs fine. I just got the oil changed, and now at low RPMs the oil guage will drop and the light will come on. Has this happened to anyone and if so, how was it resolved?

often indicaton of worn main bearings in engine years ago i had same problem with dodge diplomat thin oil will make it come on more i ran some engine cleaner in my dodge and the light went off probably because oil passages were clogged preventing circulation but often this will not work my friend blew an engine in a old truck by running it to hard best advice is try the engine cleaner if that dont work use a thicker oil and take it easy i bet it dont come on as much when its cold why the oil is thicker when its cold

Have heard of this from a few friends, not my vehicle. It has to do with one of two things, the viscosity of the oil, or the type of filter you used. I have heard that Fram filters have caused low oil pressure by design. It was solved by getting a wix or Napa brand filter. Also you could get some Lucas oil conditioner and add half a quart. DONT USE ANY ENGINE FLUSH PRODUCTS,, you will regret it. I would be curious to know how it works out for you. Post back with results,, Ok?

At low rpms the pressure is not sufficient to keep the light out. Could be oil pump, dirty oil screen, too light of oil being used, low on oil, bearing wear...no telling.

i would put a gauge in place of the sending unit temperary and make sure it really is a low oil pressure problem if it really is low put a high volume oil pump in it or an new engine cause it sounds like when your oil is warming up it it getting thinner and probably running out of your bearings instead of being close tolerances it is losing pressure to reach the rest of your engine dont want to mess with it put a heavier oil in it

depending on the miles it could one of several things, I would first change the oil and run a cleaner through it so if any line are clogged they would unclog, secondly if that is not it and assuming you already checked the oil sending switch connections and they are good, I would check the timing with a light because it it jumped timing it would also cause the same thing as you explained and lastly it could be the oil pump but because of its location I would try that last good luck
