wait i dont get this is boston going to pay 51 million dollars to thea japenese pitcher even if they dont come with the deal in next 30 days or how does it work

It is for the rights to negotiate. If the Sox can not sign him the Sox get their money back.
The Red Sox’ bid is due five days after the team wraps up a contract with Matsuzaka. If they fail to do so in that 30-day window, the $51.11 million will not be paid, Matsuzaka would return to the Lions and pitch next season, and then go through the posting season again to play in 2008

The red sox pay 51 million to talk to the japanese pitcher but if they reach no agreement he cant sign with a major league team for the next 3 years. The red sox did it mostly because the yankees would have gotting him.

no the redsox paid 51 million dollars to have the right to work out a contract with daisuke matzsusaka but if they don't get a deal done in 30 days then they will get the 51 million dollars back

Let me ask you a question. Would you pay $51M for a AA or maybe a AAA caliber player who has never thrown a pitch in the major leagues? The $51M is the rock bottom bid. If they don't come to an agreement both parties walk away and then anyone can work a deal with him. But who would want to??? Japanese baseball is not nearly as good as our major league.

If the Yanks had wanted this guy the Boss would have gotten him. They didn't even bid on him. He can't make it in US baseball. They only pitch one game a week. He can't handle a four man rotation. It's true he is good and has five pitches. But lets face it. He hasn't seen the hitters he will see over here. The Sox should have gone to free agency over here.
