Pages such as yahoo.com,google,cnn,etc. are instantly quick but other websites that are not so popular have a slower connect time?

the bandwidth allocated by the servers serving up the pages cause differences in download time. Also the memory intensive pages loaded with graphics and text and active elements can load slower. Even the 900 pound gorillas have to keep their site design simple and mostly text-based to serve up so fast.

It is part the hardware ( not everyone can afford the Cadillac in servers) and part usage . . . think gym showers . . . the more people using them, the weaker the water flow . . . if a lot of people are hitting a site at a particular time, everybody slows down.
