Actually the bump on the head is due to edema or a fluid accumulating in the area that you got hit thats why its a big buldge this fluid contains all kinds of cells neutrophils and macrophages. The bump will cause a break in the continuity of your blood vessles, and you get some blood leaking and slowly itll be engulfed. Since the head as well as most of hte body is rich in blood vessels its not a worry if a few vessles break when getting injured. Slowly the injured tissues (site of the bump) will start being selectively removed and newer tissues will form, this is why you see the different color changes every few days 2-3 days about, from red to blue to green to brown then faint and finally back to normal. Bruising in the head might be more severe though because it doesnt have fascia or fat protecting it under the skin layer, good luck hope this helps you.

Bump on the head is caused by swelling and bruising. Nothing to do with blood vessels unless one of these swell up.

There's not much flesh on the skull and it swells more, then when you bang your arm. In the process you break some blood vessels, therefore the color.
Bang your ankle and you'll find just about the same swelling and bruise, only it hurts much more.

There is a minimal amount of fat between the skin and the bone of the skull. When you are hit, any fluid that accumulates will cause a lump to form because the skull pushes it out, and prevents the fluid from being absorbed down into the fat and muscle as it would in say the thigh.

Local damage to the blood vessels allows blood to escape into the surrounding tissues, increasing their volume, and hence the swelling.

I heard that when your head gets hurt/banged/whatever, your body's reaction is to swell.
