I bought a lock for my fridge because every weekend I am gone - people steal beer every time. I drilled into the side and a lot of air came out and I think I broke the compressor or something. I brought the fridge used for like 50 bucks so is it work fixing or not because the ice is starting to melt at the top so i dont think the fridge works anymore.

i will unplug it and let it defrost and see if it comes back on.. but yeah i live in a fraternity with 4 roomates so i cant lock my door without locking them out.. and we always have a lot of people over so theres really no other choice, i should have just found a better way than drilling thru it

That was not air. It was refrigerant. There goes the ozone layer!! There goes the refrigerator as well!

Unfortunately I'd have to say this fridge is dead. You probably drilled through compressor line as you thought. It's kinda like when you hear people say never try to defrost the freezer by poking at the ice build up with a knife of sdrewdriver.. same thing. I know how it is though having to keep all those crazy roommates out of your stash! That sucks. Try letting it completely defrost then plug it back again and see if the temp starts to drop like it normally would. Otherwise to salvage this fridge you'll probably have to spend a lot more than it's worth. Good luck.

Doesn't sound like it's worth fixing! But I am just curious, if people are stealing your beer, your first thought was to lock the fridge, and not put a deadbolt on your door?! Or hell if it's that big of a problem, you couldn't put the beer in your trunk, or somewhere else, or if all else feels beat the dog **** out of whoever is taking it, and that should solve teh problem as long as you do it right!

It sounds as though you have done much more than 50 dollars worth of damage to your refrigerator.

You have obviously breeched the refrigerant line and since most of them do not have schrader ports to vacuum out and recharge the system after the line is repaired, the cost to remedy this problem is very expensive.

The good news is that the freon won't need recovered from the unit to be accepted at the scrap yard.

Sounds like you drilled the cooling coil and trashed it. Likely more cost to weld aluminum and recharge than to dump it. Should have used expoxy glue for the lock...good enough.
