As you probably know, the bag of waters is inside the uterus, and the bag is composed of membranes. The membranes tend to cling to the wall of the uterus until after the baby is born and the placenta is expelled. As the cervix begins to soften and open (dilate) at the end of pregnancy, the part of the membranes that was over the cervical opening can be felt through the opening when a vaginal exam is done. "Stripping the membranes" is done by inserting a finger between the membranes and the wall of the uterus to loosen the membranes from the wall. Sometimes, this stimulation of the uterine wall can help to start labor. Sometimes, the loosening of the membranes allows more water to collect in front of the baby which puts more pressure on the cervix and perhaps labor is stimulated that way. The procedure can be a little uncomfortable for some women. If the woman is truly near delivery, she often gets a contraction as a result of the procedure.

It can take anywhere from a few hours to days to go into labor after its done. They did mine with my son and then 3 hours later broke my water. I was already in labor and had been for hours when they stripped my membranes and they were just trying to speed my labor along, I was in labor for 36 hours total

When you are pregnant ,the uterus is a peared shaped organ that holds the fetus(baby) .And when you're starting to dilate,(the uterus opening is called the cervix. When the membranes are scraped it starts a slow leak of the "bag of water"which the baby has been in.Thus usually as the fluid leaks the uterus starts to empty and the baby begins the drop into the the birth canal. As this happens the hip bones move (this smarts) and contractions start. You will be fine sugar.I was a nurse for 37 years.

When they say scrape your memebrane, it means they will take about two fingers, stick them up inside you and "scrape" the inside front part (cervix?) i think (thats what it felt like). it only takes a few moments, and if you relax and are warned about the pressure it shouldnt really hurt.

it didnt do **** to start the labor he said would begin any minute now. that was three weeks before tristan arrived, i went into labor on my due date. he was a total moron
