I think I may go drown my sorrows in a milkshake because of this.

fattest nation, most waste, biggest energy and gas consumption, largest military, etc. etc. etc.

sounds a bit like the roman empire to me... I don't know where this mindset came from... the fattness doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as the incredibly selfish complete disregard for social responsibility... leaders (world powers) who lead by example, have loyal followers, leaders (world powers) who lead by fear, get turned over... it may not happen in our life-time, but without a serious 180 in the general consciousness of America... it does not look promising.

This country is great because of our grandparents. we're the under appreciative punk decendants

Your other answerers are crrect. There seems to be no end to the dreary, gloomy prospects of the future.

But I am training/teaching MY five kids that contentment with or without STUFF is possible. teaching them that there is more to this life than getting what you WANT. Like giving out and being a good example. Like recycling and buying everythign USED. (Well, not quite everything. TP and teflon frying pans are exceptions.) Most everything else you buy can be bought at an Oxfam/Goodwill store. Cars second/third/tenth hand.

No point blaming other people. We gotta change our own behaviour and not rely on govt (HA!!) to improve the situation. I may go to retire in Ecuador or somewhere far away.

That's the youth generation of today! I would say 35 and below. I am appalled at how lazy and selfish so many young people today are, especially 25 and below. Maybe it's because my folks were starving children of a war torn country, but I was taught to work very hard. Don't get me wrong, I party hard, too. I am of Austrian-Hungarian/German Descent and we are very strong people who eat right, work hard and look healthy because we are healthy. There is a huge difference between healthy and fat. I still bike ride, do yoga, swim and hit the spa weekly. I indulge in a cafe' latte' daily, but basically watch my food intake and care for human beings donating where I can and making sure my children watch my actions and pray that they too will follow suit. God has been taken out of much the picture, so too many outh think life is for the here and now and forget that we are to be judged in our later life for what we do in this life. There are more laws for those who break laws than the victims. People purposely do things to file lawsuits to make money. And children are not allowed to be swatted lest their parents are considered abusive. There is a huge difference between physical discipline and abuse. Yet, even kids are drilled everyday to turn in mommy and daddy if they hit you. Define hit! My son forgot to come his beautiful long hair the other day after letting it dry all day from a fresh wash and was sent to the office for hygiene. So, I get an interrogation about my son's sleep patterns, drug use and hygiene. I made them give him a urinalysis, so they'd leave him alone. He passed of course. I made them smell his hair. It smelled fresh of course. I dared them to ever do that again. Like they have nothing better to do with their time than look at a kid with long hair and think "yuck, what a disgrace to America." What's worse is the woman who turned him in is about 260 lbs and 5'6". Let's talk about hygiene again. Maybe I'll join you in that milkshake, but make sure it's 2% milk and no additives in the ice cream. Thanks.

The USA is beginning to rank too high in negatives and too low in positives. We are fat, we are not healthy, we are super violent, we rank high in infant mortality, we rank low in availability of health care for everyone. There is more but I'm getting depressed. And these rankings only compare us to other wealthy, industrial countries. I am frightened to think where we are headed.
