nothing, you haven't said how long a time period you nave been making payments, but you knew how much the repair was going to be and you agreed to have it done...if you had a problem with the money then you should have waited....your luck that there not charging a storage fee too....get a loan, borrow the money or kiss your car goodbye.....there is also a possibility that this is just a scare tactic to get you to pay the bill off now, but then again maybe not....I own a car repair business and right now I'm sitting on a car that has been here way to long and I'm charging $15.00 a day....just to let you know how a mechinice lean works, because I read some of the other answers and there wrong.......he goes to the DMV and pays like $5.00 to find out who has title to the car and if there is a lien with a bank or finance company....then he notifie's them by letter along with you...that takes a week or two....then he place's an ad in the paper for a public auction for your car...if anybody show up and bids anything over the bill then the repair shop gives the remainding balance to the secutary of states office to be either refunded to you or anyone else that is owed money for the car...you are also paying for any expense occured in the sale....and if you owe money on the car to the bank ect...they will come after you wether you have the car or not.......if no one bid on the car the shop car can applie for a clean title...your car is gone and what you have paid so far is theirs....sorry

two things ?
1 ) have you been making regular payments on the repairs without missing payments ? ( 1 missed is not a big deal )
2 ) for $3,200.00, that sounds like a lot of coin for a transmission, even for a brand new one installed ? somethings fishy here unless you drive a Porsche or something like that.......
Anyways if he does put a lien on it, he can't seize the car while payments are being paid regularly, just that you can't sell it till the bill is paid in full.....
***mental note*** keep track of your payments and collect a reciept every time you make a payment

If you signed his repair order and you still owe him money, the only way to be able sell that car in the future with a clear title is to show a paid in full receipt to the DMV.
Most mechanics will remove the lien when it is paid up.
Having used to work in a shop, there is a lot involved with filing a lien, so he may be bluffing. Mechanics don't have a lot of extra time to file.

Okay, the thing is, we own an auto repair shop and what people don't realize is, we tie money up in parts and then pay a mechanic his wage to repair it, so now our money is tied up and people owe. This does not help us out. Many times people keep bugging us, is it done yet, when will it be done, and they push and push us, and then when its done, either they take their sweet time showing up or they say, geeze we don't have the money right now, can I owe you, so now we stopped that, no money, no car, simple as that. We either bring the cars home, or lock them in the garage until they show with the money. You get to the point you have to do that. We are not in the charity business.

If you have a signed contract and can prove that you are meeting the terms of the contract and paying in a timely manner, there is nothing that the mechanic can do.

pay the bill. As long as they accept a payment they cannot do anything. By accepting payment it is implied that all is good.

first of all i want extra suggestion. The verify that your insurance agency gave you probably did you supply that money to the body save to pay for the restore on your motor vehicle. If it wasnt paid then why did they launch the motor vehicle to you? the really way they could positioned that lein on your motor vehicle is in case you didnt pay them or refused to pay them for there facilities on your motor vehicle. If The estiment replaced into better than what the insurence agency paid then you definitely contact your insurence agency and document an suplament declare then pay the body save for the further upkeep
