and if you hear grinding noises now...you could very well need new rotor(s) also.

That would be a yes. A grinding sound means your brake pads are gone and its stopping by rubbing menal to metal. You may/will need new rotors also. It's not a bad job to replace this stuff. Go to your local auto parts store and get a price. You will need 2 rotors; one for each side and 4 pads( this is one set..and box will come with 4 in it.) Jack up the car, one side at the time, take off the tire; there will be 2 bolts holding the brake assembly on, take those out and pull the assembly off; You will see how the pads fit in. Now, look at the assembly...you will see a circle thing..place an OLD pad on it and clamp it with a "C" clamp..tighten it slowly and push the circle thing all the way back in...this is pushing the fluid back up. At this point the rotor should just pull off. Put the new rotor on...put the new pads in the way the old pads came out..tighten the bolts and your done. Do the other side. Now, start the car...DON"T MOVE IT. In park slowly press the brake; it will go all the way to the floor( your putting fluid back in the circle thing) Just keep pumping the brake slow a couple of time and it will build back up presure...will be like normal. Put car in rev. slowly back up and press brake, then go forward, press brake..to check everything...and your good to go.

If you have disc brakes, one possibility is dirt with grit found its way between the pads and disc. To be sure check your brake fluid level. If it has gone low without any leaks, the conclusion there would be, the fluids in the slave cylinders of your brake pads. It may be needed to replace your brake pads.

sounds like you better get to them asap, sounds like metal against metal,if thats the case, you might have to get pads and rotors.if you get right to it,you might get by just having the rotors turned down.
