Ok, I'm writing this story for school, about this 17 year old who's father is in Her Majesty's Navy and is fighting in the 2nd World War. His father dies and the son has to be the one to bring the news to his father's best friend, who's also special to him as well. My question here is what kind of thing would the friend say to the son? Something that would have actual meaning, being that this is his best friend who had just died as well. Please help.

Just to clarify what I'm asking, what would the friend say to the son?(son just told the friend that his(son's) dad had died)

I would consider the kind of approach which would bring out the full emotional impact of the news upon his father's best friend.

Saying: "I just got some bad news from the front: Dad died."

Then his best friend would say: "H-how?"

Then you can go into detail, bringing out all the emotional turmoil and really reel in the reader with the finished product.

But I would spend some time on this. Revise it, edit it as you go. Get it right as much as you can. Play it out in your head.

I'm always doing that with mine.

He could say something like " He fought a good fight". Or "It comforts me
to know he died while doing something heroic for you, me and our country".
Hope I helped.

write "your friend just died" say it full force. then, show the emotion (or better yet, write the emotion :-) )
