Question in the title but I wondered what do you do when you run out of houses ? Do you use other markers ? Allow no more building till they come free then auction them when they come free or something else ?

Official rules state that when you run out of house (or hotels for that matter) no more can be bought until some are sold for hotels or mortgaged. Then they are auctioned off.

Once you've run out of houses, no-one can build any more until some are sold back to the bank.
It also means that if someone has (e.g.) 2 houses on a property, they can't build a hotel, as they can't get the houses to build 3 then 4 the hotel.

I always thought that by the time u run out of houses u could swap some of the houses on the board for hotels and free up some houses. I think its four houses to a hotel

players wishing to build must wait for some player to return or sell
his/her houses to the Bank before building. If there are a limited
number of houses and hotels available and two or more players wish
to buy more than the Bank has, the houses or hotels must be sold at
auction to the highest bidder.

Well, you arn't rally ment to use any more as if you play a computor game version you have to set the max no. of houses and hotels (i think the board is 24) and that is the limet but if you do want some more you could probably order some or if it is a party use some sort of candy!!! you can also use lego!!!

Oh wait, I got my rule sheet out (have been playing today):
"When the bank has no houses to sell, players wishing to build must wait for some player to to return or to sell his houses to the bank before they can build. You have to wait until some become free by either when somone buys a hotel or someone sells them back to the bank

No houses may be purchased until someone upgrades to hotels. If you want to really crush someone, stick at the 4-house mark and they won't be able to build.

when i used to play thatgame we werent allowed to buy anymore until they were transfered into hotels and some houses would be free again
