Ok, so now that I have your attention..... HELP...
Running WindowsME

I looked into the .....Run feature, and typed in Regedit. Up came registry editor.... My question is....Is it normal to have two occurences of most programs in there? example. outlookexpress.html ......then...outlookexpress.html.1.......there are multiple occurances of different programs in such patterns.

OR ..... is it safe to delete the second copy of these programs, of course watching very carefully that it is an exact copy, and not just a similarity.

Then if I do end up screwing something up will the recovery CD fix any problems.

thanks....

Never ever mess with the registry unless you know what you are doing! Its basically a place that Windows uses to store hardware and software configuration information, user preferences and setup information... and it is a mess. One of the reasons why I stick to Linux :)

If you really want to do some registry clean up, get CCleaner which is very useful.

And always make a backup by going to File > Export and saving the current state of the registry. This can be imported at a later stage if something goes wrong

The recovery CD can get the computer going again, but you might have messed up a lot of software. Editing the registry isn't something for normal people to do. Even die hard geeks get in trouble doing that.
All programs have multiple entries in the registry for various purposes.

When you're inside the registry tree on a Windows operating system you going to see numerous duplicate entries. Do not delete the duplicate entries! Now onto your second question, the original system disks will restore anything that came with your computer! But beware, they will not restore files that you have created. The best way to learn a computer is to tear apart a few times. So if you feel comfortable playing in the registry, feel free. Just make sure there's nothing valuable on your computer that you cannot replace!

Honestly, I dont think you should delete anything. Because I used to have Windows ME and something like that happened to me and I deleted what I thought was a copy and it ended up very important to the system and the Recovery CD didnt help at all. So I had to restore factory settings and everything on my computer was deleted!

oh boy. your system is really in bad shape. the system registry is the glue that holds your programs together. what I would do is backup all the files you want to keep some how. another harddrive on cd or diskette be sure to get all of the files you want then run the restore cd then reinstall any programs that the restore in not reinstall. you could try to regseeker and have it do a clean on it
