I think you missed the ^2 on your quadratic equation

15x^2-8x-16
=15x^2 -20x +12x -16
=5x(3x-4) +4(3x-4)
=(3x-4)(5x+4)

15x^2 - 8x - 16
my teacher uses this thing called the "cow"
take the 15 and multiply it to the -16
x^2 - 8x - 240
(x + ?)(x - ?)
(x + 12)(x - 20)
divide the 15 back out of the the factored problem
it doesnt necessarily have to be 15, it can be factors of 15
(3x - 4)(5x + 4)
check it

ANSWER
(3x - 4)(5x + 4)

Are you sure you have the formula correctly?

If you really meant 15x - 8x - 16, then
an only thing you can do is to take X outside and make it:
x(15 - 8) - 16
simply this and get:
7x - 16

Is this correct or is the first term squared?

assuming the equation is correct:

7x - 16 = 0

7x = 16

x = 16/7

assuming the first term is squared

(5x +4)(3x - 4)

you need numbers so that the out side and inside term add
to -8 and the last two terms multiply to -16

15^2 -8x -16

find 15*16 which is 240
then find sum of 240 that will give you -8
which is -20 and 12

15^2 -20x + 12x - 16

(15^2 - 20x) (12x- 16)
5x(3x-4) 4(3x-4)

anwser is (5x+4)(3x-4)
