It is recommended that once the battery is fully charged you must remove the plug. It is also good maintenance practice to extend battery life to drain it completely at least once a month if you are a power user. The previous suggestion is sound that when you wish to continue using the notebook just remove the fully charged battery. I have a couple of HP notebooks which has battery failure before I practice what I recommend but now my batteries have lasted more than 2 years without any trouble. Good luck. Hope I help a little. I always keep mine pluged in and it's dosen't seem to have any damage. So I don't think it would hurt it.

you should occasionaly let it run off battery power to keep the battery healthy
