80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

Ah, the impossible question, how about to live, laugh, love. To leave the world a better place than when you entered. For some to just survive and hope for something better at the end. To believe, to find, to search, to ask, to rebel, to change or to build. I think the meaning of life is sometimes a combination of all these things and at times for some individuals only one of these things. I know it isn't about the job you have, the car you drive, the clothes you wear or any other stuff you got. It's about catching firefly when your kid and always being the hero, about you mom's laughter or helping your dad with fixing the car. It is about discovering yourself, being true to yourself and giving yourself love that can never be taken from you. Life can be about anything you make it about or allow it to be about. Sometimes it is hard to go against society and set values in your world but sometimes it is necessary. Life's meaning is an open book sometimes things beyond your control happen but you are always in control of your own reactions to it though I suppose children below a certain age are excluded from that responsibility.

Oh no, not again. Andy P is quite right, the answer is 42.
Just wait a sodding minute! You want a question that goes with the answer for 42? Well, how about what's six times seven? Or how many Vogons does it take to change a lightbulb? Here's one! How many roads must a man walk down?
To quote from The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, once again -
Deep Thought: Have an answer for you? Yes. But you're not going to like it.
Fook: Please tell us. We must know!
Deep Thought: Okay. The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is...
[wild cheers from audience, then silence]
Deep Thought: 42.

You are essentially a soft protein coating around a wonderfully complex molecule called DNA that reproduces itself in a million ways in different systems we call "life forms". En-mass it does this almost completely irrespective of your desires, if a few individual life forms make decisions not to reproduce it really doesn't affect the DNA pool much.
Of course this is a terrible fact for the precious little creatures that we are to accept, and for many is totally unacceptable so they create myths to amplify their importance in the scheme of things.
We wander around looking for meaning and structure where there is none and beating ourselves up for not "achieving" or "finding ourselves".
The problem is that this particular DNA system (human) has the ability to imagine and to dream and to wonder. That's great. Go dream and have fun and if you can produce offspring sometime or help other peoples offspring develop, its as close as your gonna get to meaning.

Ahh yes the most popular question...
As I keep telling people, Why waste your life trying to find out its meaning?
Just accept your here and have fun with it. You only get one shot so why not spend it how you want?
Dont give in to presuures of society by joinning religon or other things... Just be yourself. Do what you want to do. And make it so when you finally do die, you have no regrets.
