On Earth, the earth is tilted with respect to the sun.In the summer, the north pole is pointed toward but not directly at the sun, so as the earth turns, it is always lit. At the south pole in the summer, the lght of the sun never hits the earth. Where is the line that delimits this sunshine? The Arctic Circle. Below the Arctic circle, the days are long in June but as you approach the equator, the days approach half sunlight, half dark. Some cultures celebrate this, such as Norway...the land of the midnight sun, where the months of May, Jun and july have sunlightligh all day and night

During the winter, it is reversed. The SOuth Pole gets lit all day and the North Pole is dark.

It has to do with the Earth's orbit around the sun. The longest day is when the Earth is closest to the sun, and in turn, the shortest day is when the Earth is farthest from the sun.

Believe it or not, you'd have to look in the Bible. The King James Version. Add up the incidents, and that'll give you not only the reason for the time discrepancy, but will match it exactly long before there was a need or way to do it.
