The descent of Theseus and Peirithoos into Hades.
Each hero made a vow to marry a daughter of Zeus. Theseus chose Helen of Sparta, but she was to young to marry. Peirithoos audaciously wanted Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, as a his bride.
When they went into the Underworld, Hades tricked both men by inviting them to a feast. As the Greek heroes sat down, they were trapped either by snakes coiling around their legs or they were fastened to the ground by stone.
Herakles, during his 12 labors, rescued Theseus from Hades, but was unable to save Peirithoos from his fate.

One of my favorites is Sisyphus, who was doomed to roll an enormous rock up a hill. Just as the rock would nearly reach the top, it would slip away from him and he would have to start again.
