Always remember this, your tires are the only thing that has contact with the road. If you want tires that last you a long time, go for hard compound tires. The advantages is, generally it last longer but at a high cost... it has less traction compare to soft compound tires and if you lock up in the wet, good luck.
You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars and get the best but you shouldn't spend bare mininal on cheap stuff.
Cheap brands?? I can't say that all cheap brands are bad and all name brand are good. $40each, where are you from??
$40 each in U.S (CA) Could be O.K
$40 each in Australia Forget it!! Even if you own a small car runs on 13in' wheel
Retract tires?? Forget it!! I never recommand anyone to buy these. It is very dangerous driving at high speed (freeways, highways) The tire might look alright, but the wall could be damaged. You have no idea of the history what that tire has been through.....
And lastly, like everyone says. How is your driving habit??
Do some research on it.... I recommand Bridgestone! They are really a good brand. Generally, they might not last as long because they are softer than others but I rather spend that money so if I ever lock up, it will stop much shorter.
Lastly, don't put a used by date on your tires!! In the time of 3 months, I had to go through 5 tries(plus 8 repairs) because I ran over sharp things like nails.... and on the other hand, I had a set of stock tires lasted me 3 years (60,000 kms/37,500miles)
Hope this helps = ]
