Okay I know how to find the midpoint of a line segment with the formula but how do you answer this question?

Find the coordinates of the point on line segment AB that is one-fourth the distance from A to B for A(8,3) and B(10,-5).

Can anyone explain how to work this step by step?

first find the midpoint of AB which is C(9,-2).
Now obviously the one-fourth distance will be the midpoint of AC which is ...well I let you do this. This is simple knowing the formula for the midpoint .
Mathguy did well too but you are supposed to apply, I think, midpoint formula.

yes very simple
1) plot the points on graph sheet
2)bisect the line AB - to do this you need a compass
with A as center and adjust your compass to more than half of the length of line AB(approxly more than half)
now draw arcs on either sides of line AB
repeat the same with point B as center
now you will find that the arcs will intersect at certain point on either side of AB
join those two points where the arcs intersected. this line will pass through the midpoint of line AB
name the midpoint as C
now repeat the process of bisecting the linesegment AC
you will get the midpoint of AC , name this poind as D
now AD will be exactly one-fourth of AB and you will also have the co-ordinates of point D

1. use slope to find the distance from point A to point B
2. divide the slope by 4 (one fourth the distance)
3. start at point A and count the slope that you found in step 2
4. mark the point

the slope from point A to point B is -8/2
divide -8/2 by 4
you get -2/.5
start at (8,3) and count down 2 and to the left .5
one fourth the distance from A to B is (8.5,1)

choose as best answer if this helps please

You need to go one fourth the way from A to B. One fourth the way from 8 to 10 is 8.5. One fourth the way from 3 to -5 is 1. (8.5, 1) is the point.

The x-coordinate of M is 4, which equals (x1+x2)/2. x1 = 6, so 4 = (6+x2)/2, or 6+x2 = 8, or x2 = 2. The y-coordinate of M is two, which equals (y1+y2)/2. y1 = 5, so 2 = (5+y2)/2, or 5+y2 = 4, or y2 = -a million. The coordinates of E are (2,-a million).
